So, you have a podcast and a ton of great content, but you’re looking for new ways to get in front of more people — and you’ve decided that short-form video is your next step in attracting new listeners.
Platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts offer immense visibility and reach, meaning repurposing your podcast into bite-sized video content feels like the easiest way to reach a new audience without creating something new.
The struggle comes when you’re trying to figure out how to repurpose your podcast episodes, so let’s talk about how to turn your episodes into scroll-stopping clips:
Why Repurpose Your Podcast Into Short-Form Video?
Podcasts are traditionally a long-form type of content, meaning they take more time to consume and create. Short-form videos, on the other hand, are perfect for grabbing attention and getting your podcast out there, even if you don’t already have a huge audience.
Not everyone has time to sit down and listen to a full episode, but a 7-30-second clip is easy (the actual length depends on the platform).
Plus, repurposing your podcast saves you time (which saves you money) versus creating all-new content. You’ve already done the hard work of recording — now it’s about finding the most captivating, mic-drop moments of your episodes and sharing them with your audience.
How to Start Turning Your Podcast Episodes Into Short-Form Videos
While it may be tempting to turn your podcast into 30-second segments, hit publish, and hope for the best — you can’t ditch strategy for simplicity. You’ll still need to choose the clips to publish, how to edit and record them, and where to share them.
Here’s how to start repurposing your podcast into short-form video:
Step #1: Pick Your Best Moments
Not every second of your podcast is made for short-form video, so start by picking out your (or your guest’s) best moments. Look for:
- “Mic-drop” moments, the one-liners viewers can’t help but share with their friends
- Moments that make your listeners problem-aware, that state something that shifts their perspective
- Relatable moments that would resonate with your dream clients
You won’t need hours of footage, and don’t pull apart an episode to find everything; find what makes the most sense and move on to the next episode!
Step #2: Choose Your Video Style
Once you pick your moments or clips, it’s time to decide on a style or format for your videos. If you have a video podcast and already have a video recording of your episode, you can use that.
Suppose you don’t have a video podcast; use your clips as audiograms (Descript does this for you). In that case, b-rolls with text overlay (remember, b-rolls can simply be you completing a daily task that is on brand for your business…we don’t have to overcomplicate it) or re-record them as “talking head” clips.
Also, take into consideration what type of content will perform best on the platform you want to publish it on. The same style or format for a podcast clip turned into an Instagram Reel may not perform the same on YouTube.
Step #3: Share!
Now that your content is ready, it’s time to post! Don’t just throw them up without a plan though; think about what you want your audience to do after watching. Add captions to tease the full episode and include a call to action directing them to your podcast, current lead magnet, or offer!
Don’t be afraid to cross-post; just make sure you adjust your post to better suit the platform you’re posting to!
A Few Tips to Save Your Sanity
If the idea of doing all of this feels like a lot, I get it. Trying to create content you’re not used to making — even if it’s repurposed from content you already have — can be exhausting. But there are a few things you can start doing to make it easier:
- Set aside time to batch your work. Edit a handful of clips at once instead of trying to do it as you go!
- Outsource your content repurposing! My team and I are here to take additional tech off your plate so you can focus on doing what you love most!
- Keep your phone handy and record simple clips during your day; that way, you’ll always have b-roll footage (especially on the days you don’t feel like recording).
- Start small and focus on one type of video (like audiograms) before trying everything at once.
- Prep for the content while you’re recording your podcast episodes. Record as a video podcast for quick clips and focus on your audio quality so the content carries over well.
Why Repurposing Your Podcast Matters
At the end of the day, repurposing your podcast into a short-form video is about increasing your visibility and connecting with your audience — and a new audience — without adding on a ton of extra work. It’s a simple way to extend your reach and get more eyes (and ears) on your content. Plus, it makes all the time you spend creating your podcast feel even more worth it!
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your best podcast moments, start editing, and let your content do double (or triple) duty. If you don’t have the time or capacity to do it yourself, fill out this form here and see how we can help you!
