With the demand for short-form video on the rise (at least 75% of people prefer video over text for learning about products/services), it’s quickly becoming a necessity for podcasters to create — and keep creating.
But, when you’re spending you’re energy on creating the long-form content you love (like your podcast), it can be hard to find the time to record and create new video content — which is why I’m teaching you how to find engaging b-roll clips as a podcaster to make content creation that much easier.
We’ll share some clips to get you started, including how to use them and what they are!
What is a B-Roll Clip?
Officially, a B-roll is a video clip that includes narrative features to create a sense of time and place and add layers of meaning to the story. In the sense of social media, you can simplify it to a video clip of you doing something — even the most mediocre of things in your daily routine, like pouring your cup of coffee or moving your laundry to the dryer.
B-roll is ideal for keeping your viewers engaged and entertained without having to prep, plan, or majorly edit your video. It’s a lot more laid-back and relaxed than most video content you would create (and you can use it whenever and wherever you are).
How to Record B-Roll Clips as a Podcaster
The easiest way to record B-roll clips as a podcaster is to invest in a tripod or phone stand and set it up to record you while planning, recording, editing, or marketing your podcast. You want to make sure you’re clearly within the camera frame — no one wants to want to watch your B-roll if you’re not actually in your B-roll!
After you set up your camera, do what you would normally do during your day and film it! Record yourself working on your laptop, taking a walk outside, making your breakfast, or participating in your hobbies — truly, anything you do could be used for a B-roll!
Of course, as a podcaster, I do recommend centering your B-roll around your podcast and the topics it includes!
How to Use Your B-Roll to Market Your Podcast
Now that you have your B-roll, it’s time to use it! B-roll is ideal for short-form videos on multiple different platforms like Instagram (Reels), YouTube (shorts), Facebook (Reels), TikTok, and Pinterest.
Use your B-roll by using a voiceover — which can absolutely be a segment from your podcast audio — or by using text overlay to deliver your information. You can share your top tips, give your POV, or give your hot take.
You can use the same B-roll for multiple videos and repurpose each video for different platforms.
