Descript Review: New Pricing Tiers, Transcripts, and More

< back to blog home

Honest Descript Review | Lynelle Lillian

Whether you’ve been podcasting for five years or five days, you know that editing your episodes can feel like a never-ending chore. And, if you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for something to make the process less daunting and time-consuming.

That’s where Descript comes in (and why I’m sharing all my thoughts in this honest Descript review) — it’s the tool that makes editing your podcast almost as easy as editing a Google doc (maybe easier?)!

Please Note: This blog post may include affiliate links, meaning that if you click through a link and purchase a product, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What is Descript?

Descript is your not-so-average editing software. It’s like having a magic wand for podcast editing — you can edit your podcast just by editing your transcript. It’s a self-proclaimed “AI-powered, fully featured, end-to-end video editor” and is my go-to for editing regular and video podcasts.

With Descript, podcasters can go through their entire workflow in one place without purchasing or subscribing to multiple programs and tools. You can record, transcribe, edit, make clips, and publish your episodes all in one place: Descript.

Although I haven’t fully eliminated all other podcasting tools, hosting, and editing platforms, Descript is quickly becoming — if it hasn’t already — my go-to favorite.

What I Love About Descript — And What to Look Out For

If you haven’t already noticed, I’m a huge fan of Descript and will always recommend it to my clients, friends, and community. But that doesn’t mean I’m oblivious to its flaws—it just means that its features are worth overlooking its tiny hiccups.

Descript brings a lot (and I mean, a LOT) of features to the table. It offers video editing, podcasting, clips, rooms, captions, screen recording, transcription, and even AI speech to sub over any one-worded mishaps in your recordings with an AI-version of your own voice.

But while editing is easy to navigate and learn, thanks to its structure similar to Word or Google Docs, it can be hard to navigate the platform and learn how to access — or turn off — all its features.

Descript also runs a little heavy on your computer and can occasionally overload it if you’re trying to balance the program with your 123894 tabs open (me too).

Descript Pricing & Plans

Descript just went through a new plan update, meaning all their pricing and plan tiers have changed! If you were a Descript member before these changes, you were grandfathered into their legacy plans. If not, or if you were a free user, these are the current plans you can pick from:

Hobbyist: $12/month. Perfect for most podcasters who plan to publish once per week with the occasional batching of podcast episodes. It offers 10 transcription hours/month.

Creator: $24/month. This is ideal if you have a video podcast, as it allows you to export in 4 K, watermark-free. You also have 30 transcription hours/month and unlimited access to their stock library.

Business: $40/month. This might be perfect if you have multiple podcasts or channels requiring editing, like YouTube and Podcasts. It offers 40 transcription hours/month and unlimited access to its AI suite.

Descript also offers a free plan to test their features and see if you like it before subscribing!

Descript Review: My Final Thoughts

Overall, Descript is the best editing and podcasting software I’ve found recently. It offers everything a beginner or experienced podcaster needs to publish high-quality episodes without spending hours combing through audio.

Plus, Descript tends to roll out new features and collaborations regularly, so I can’t wait to see what they release in the future and how it will help podcasters create more engaging, higher-quality shows and episodes. If you’d like to try Descript, click here to sign up for your free account!
