Starting a podcast can feel intimidating when you’re bombarded with all the “shoulds” and “musts” from every “expert” in the online space. But while you’re researching with the best intentions, many of these resources are the source of podcasting myths and misconceptions that’ll end up holding you back.
Here’s the truth—you shouldn’t let online advice stop you from sharing your expertise and building deeper connections with your audience.
So let’s take a minute, have a reset, and look behind these misconceptions. You’ll see that starting your podcast might be more accessible than you think.
The Truth Behind The Most Common Podcasting Myths & Misconceptions:
Yes, these misconceptions have a bit of truth buried in them, but most have been blown into something wildly disproportionate to that truth. To give you the full picture, I’m sharing the most common misconceptions I see as a podcast manager, the truth behind them, and a tip you can apply when starting (or growing) your own podcast:
Myth #1: You Need a Big Audience to See Results
Truth: You don’t need an audience at all.
You don’t need thousands of followers or subscribers before starting your podcast. That’s backwards thinking! Your podcast can actually help you build that audience.
Starting small has its perks. When you have just a few dedicated listeners who love your content, they become your biggest advocates. Just 10 engaged listeners who share your show with friends are worth more than a million uninterested listeners.
Plus, podcast content shows up in Google searches, helping new people find you even if you don’t have a big social media following.
Want a shortcut to reaching more people? Try being a guest on other podcasts. This puts you in front of established audiences and helps you connect with other creators in your field.
Myth #2: It’s Expensive to Start a Podcast
Truth: It costs what you decide to spend.
While good audio quality matters, you don’t need fancy equipment to get started. A decent mic like the Samson Q2U (under $100) will serve you well until you’re ready to upgrade.
Free tools like Audacity work great for editing, and hosting platforms like Podbean start around $10 monthly. The best investment isn’t gear—it’s the time you spend planning content that resonates with your audience.

Myth #3: Creating Podcast Content Takes Too Much Time
Truth: Podcasting actually saves time in your marketing.
If you’d rather talk than write, podcasting might just be what you need for an easier marketing strategy. Each episode you record can become the source of your content across most–if not all—of your platforms.
From one 15-minute podcast, you can create:
- Instagram posts and Reels
- Blog content
- Email newsletters
- Pinterest graphics
- LinkedIn updates
This approach means less time staring at a blank page, wondering what to post. You create content once, then adapt it for different platforms—working smarter, not harder.
Hate the idea of doing all that repurposing yourself? That’s where help comes in handy—more on that below.
What Do You Think? Is It Time to Start a Podcast?
Now that you know the truth behind the myths, does podcasting seem more within reach? You don’t need a huge following, expensive gear, or endless hours to create a show that connects with your audience and grows your business.
All you really need is your expertise and the willingness to share it. Your voice matters, and the right people will find value in what you have to say.
