How to Be a Podcast Guest | Lynelle Lillian

Being a podcast guest is a great way to expand your network, grow your brand, and connect with potential clients outside of your “typical” space. But, whether you’re a podcasting newbie or a seasoned speaker, it’s important to understand the proper etiquette that comes with being a guest — and pitching yourself to the podcast host.

The best podcast appearance starts with clear communication, preparation, and respect for your host’s time and audience. If you were wondering how to be the best podcast guest, keep reading — this guide is for you!

Why You Should Be a Guest (Whether You Have a Podcast Yourself or Not)

Having a podcast doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be on others, and it also goes the other way; not having a podcast doesn’t mean you can’t break into the podcasting world through other’s shoes.

Being a podcast guest offers a range of benefits (whether you have your own show or not), like tapping into a new audience and introducing yourself to people who may have never come across your work otherwise, building authority as a trusted resource in your industry, and even potentially converting listeners into leads and potential clients.

How to Be a Podcast Guest: A Step-By-Step Guide

Being a podcast guest is more than just showing up and talking; you’re building meaningful connections with a new community. Whatever your purpose for becoming a guest, you should be putting your all into the show — including making sure you’re speaking to the right people to begin with.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to becoming a podcast guest:

#1. Find & Pitch a Podcast

If you’ve been invited to a podcast, fantastic! If not, no worries — you can always find and pitch yourself to podcasts that align with your niche or industry.

Start by researching podcasts that reach your ideal audience. Listen to a few episodes to ensure your message fits their style, then prepare a few talking points highlighting your expertise or what you want to be known for.

When pitching, keep it concise and tailored to the podcast, making it clear why you’d be a great fit for their audience.

#2. Follow Proper Podcasting Etiquette

Once you’ve secured a guest spot, it’s crucial to be respectful of the host’s time and expectations. Remember to:

  • Please read and review any resources they send to ensure alignment with their show guidelines and expectations.
  • Use quality equipment; the way you sound will reflect you and your host (and if they can’t understand you because of poor audio quality, it’s not likely they’ll understand you enough to want to book you).
  • Be prompt with responses, scheduling, and sharing any information the host needs from you.
  • If anything is unclear (like the length of the episode, if it’s recorded live or edited, or is a video podcast), don’t hesitate to ask! Clear communication sets the tone for a smooth recording.

#3. Promote the Episode

Your responsibility as a podcast guest doesn’t end after the recording. Once the episode goes live, it’s important to hype it up! Share the episode across your social media platforms, blog, or newsletter. Engage with the audience by tagging the host and thanking them publicly, which shows appreciation and increases the episode’s visibility.

The more effort you put into promoting the podcast, the more value you bring to both the host and yourself.

#4. Reflect & Connect

After the episode airs, take a moment to reflect on how it went. Did you convey your message clearly? Were there any parts of the conversation you feel could have been stronger? Use these reflections as learning points for future podcast appearances.

Additionally, reconnect with the host after the episode to express your gratitude. Building strong relationships with podcast hosts can lead to future collaborations and even new opportunities down the line.

Taking The First Step

If you’re ready to take the plunge into podcast guesting, the first step is simply putting yourself out there. Craft that pitch, reach out to podcasts that resonate with you, and trust that your voice matters. It’s okay to be nervous — every great podcast guest starts somewhere.

The key is to connect with the audience on an emotional level, show up authentically, and most importantly, have fun with it. Remember, each interview is an opportunity to not only share your expertise but to learn, grow, and build connections.
